Darboven built the Incentión brand around sustainable and fair coffee quality, combining coffee and cocoa from fair trade, grown under strictly controlled and certified organic conditions. For Albert Darboven, real enjoyment of coffee only begins once the farmers who grow and harvest it are paid fairly for their work, so his company has long supported people in coffee growing countries and their often difficult living conditions. When the association TransFair e.V. first made a Fairtrade certification for coffee possible, Albert Darboven seized the opportunity right away, and in 1993 J. J. Darboven became a pioneer by bringing the first fair coffee to German supermarkets, at the time still sold as TransFair Kaffee, before the brand Café Intención emerged from it in 2004.

Growing Regions of Café Intención
The raw beans for Café Intención are grown in Honduras and Peru. In the especially favorable climate of the Honduran highlands, the high-quality Fairtrade and organic beans of Café Intención thrive particularly well, and only under sustainable conditions. Honduras is now home to 40 Fairtrade-certified cooperatives working with numerous coffee farms that partner with Café Intención. In Peru, Café Intención has worked since 2007 with the cooperative Central Fronteriza Del Norte De Cafetaleros (CENFROCAFE). Near the Ecuadorian border, this Fairtrade coffee is grown organically on slopes above 1,600 meters. Proceeds from Fairtrade sales fund training and education for coffee farmers and help guarantee that children in these families can go to school.
Café Intención maintains another partnership with the cooperative Café Orgánico Marcala Sociedad Anónima (COMSA) in Marcala, La Paz, Honduras. The cooperative guarantees not only fair organic coffee but also a better future for its workers and their children, with a strong focus on training and further education. On the Finca Fortaleza, for example, members develop their own organic pest control products and fertilizers. The organization also plans ahead: if a harvest turns out weaker than expected, members grow fruit and vegetables on their fincas so they can support themselves.
