Demetrio Mauro: From Fisherman to Passionate Coffee Trader

Caffè Mauro was founded in 1949 in Villa San Giovanni, a coastal town in Calabria, southern Italy.

Founder Demetrio Mauro was born in 1905 and worked as a fisherman before the Second World War pushed him toward a new path. He turned his love of coffee into a business, starting with a small roastery in an old warehouse near the harbor with a capacity of just 20 kilograms.

Early success led to an important step in 1958. The original site no longer offered enough space for growing demand, so Caffè Mauro moved into a new factory covering 10,000 square meters across four floors. Rising demand later required expanding the site to 15,000 square meters.espresso and filter coffee, that means precise, layered cups with distinct profiles. Single origins, carefully composed blends, and seasonal lots make the range relevant for everyday brewing and more exact home barista routines alike.

In 1997, an even larger facility opened in the industrial area of Villa San Giovanni, spanning more than 37,000 square meters. It remains one of the most modern coffee production sites in Europe today.

Considering that a small roastery producing just 20 kilograms a year grew into an operation turning out 300 kilograms a day in 1952, 1,500 kilograms in 1957, and eventually 30,000 kilograms daily, Caffè Mauro can look back on a remarkable growth story.
