Carroux Coffee: Fine Quality from Hamburg

Carroux Coffee has been part of Hamburg's coffee culture in Blankenese since 1998. As a roaster of premium espresso, this small company holds its own against major names in the industry and stands confidently alongside Italian premium roasters.

Carroux has a clear focus on espresso rather than filter coffee. Both private customers and upscale hospitality businesses now rely on Carroux as a trusted name.

The range is designed mainly for espresso machines and fully automatic coffee machines, with some blends also suited to a moka pot or a filter coffee machine.

How Carroux Began

The Carroux success story began when founder Ulrich Carroux was juggling an architecture degree with his own pizza delivery business. To stay awake during long night shifts, he searched for the best possible espresso, but supermarket coffee never quite convinced him.

Carroux eventually bought a 1958 Probat roaster and began his own roasting experiments. As it turned out, the roaster had come full circle. It had previously served the Bielenberg roastery in Blankenese, the very neighbourhood where Carroux would later build the business.

Carroux coffee roastery in Hamburg

A Small, Carefully Curated Range at the Hamburg Roastery

With this roaster, Ulrich Carroux finally found the perfect espresso blend, and he has stayed true to this recipe ever since. His path into coffee seems almost predestined. His grandfather worked as a photographer for Jacobs Kaffee, and Ulrich himself began selling coffee at the age of twelve, pushing a handcart through the local weekly market.

Today, 15 employees, including his son, support him at the flagship roastery on Elbchaussee 583 in Hamburg, roasting, pouring, and selling coffee. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing break with a hot espresso right at the roastery.

This small roastery from northern Germany offers three products: Caffee Crema, Espresso, and decaffeinated Espresso. Carroux prefers a small, carefully curated range to guarantee the best quality, and the team checks the beans throughout the entire production process.

FAQs
What makes Carroux coffee special?

Carroux Coffee stands for Hanseatic roasting craft with a clear focus on espresso. In Hamburg-Blankenese and the roastery in Billbrook, selected green coffees are roasted using the traditional drum roasting method, creating a velvety yet spicy aroma profile. At roastmarket, you can find these espresso and crema roasts as whole beans or ground coffee for different preparation methods.

Which Carroux coffee suits my fully automatic machine?

Carroux Caffee Crema, made from 100 percent Arabica, was developed specifically for fully automatic coffee machines and works particularly well for a Verlängerter or Schümli. The espresso blends Carroux Cima and Carroux Nobile can also be used in a fully automatic machine if you prefer a stronger espresso or cappuccino. At roastmarket, you can order these roasts as whole beans for your machine.

What does the popular Carroux Cima Espresso taste like?

Carroux Espresso relies on a proven blend of around 80 percent Arabica and 20 percent washed Robusta. The traditional drum roasting method creates a velvety mouthfeel with a bold, spicy character and a dense crema. This espresso can be enjoyed on its own or as a base for cappuccino and other milk-based drinks, and it is available at roastmarket as whole beans.

Where is Carroux coffee roasted?

Carroux coffee is roasted in Hamburg. The roastery is closely connected to the flagship location in Blankenese, where espresso is tasted every day. Carroux uses the traditional drum roasting method to produce a compact range of espresso and crema roasts, which are checked before packaging. You can conveniently order these beans through roastmarket.

Can I also prepare Carroux coffee as filter coffee?

Carroux focuses on espresso and Caffee Crema, but many coffee fans still prepare individual roasts as filter coffee. If you want to use Carroux in a pour-over brewer or French press, choose one of the milder blends and set a noticeably coarser grind. This way, the aromas come through well with this preparation method too.
